The first trailer for the new drama The Big Short shows a savvy businessman predicting the economic crisis of 2008 to his naive co-workers. The film, prescription which is based on the book by Moneyball author Michael Lewis, this is likely to get heads turning when it arrives in theaters later this year. Check out the new trailer below and our thoughts on it underneath.

What’s to Like:

The cast is absolutely phenomenal with few weak links on display. With a cast featuring Oscar winners Christian Bale and Melissa Leo (reuniting after The Fighter) alongside Marisa Tomei and Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, and Steve Carell, this film has one of the best casts of the year taking on one of the biggest stories of the past decade.

What’s to Dislike:

Director Adam McKay, who co-wrote the screenplay, has proven to be more adept at satire than serious drama so this is going to be a tricky subject to pull off. Fortunately though, the trailer shows a mix of comedy and drama. If it’s any indication of the real film, this movie could walk the line between being deadly serious and being satirically over-the-top.

Our Verdict:

Michael Lewis’ books have previously been adapted into Oscar-caliber films like The Blind Side and Moneyball. With an all-star cast delivering this powerful story, we have really high hopes for this film.
